Two Seconds Before Ecstasy is a rewriting of the Antigone myth, shifting focus from political stakes to the intimacy of a woman who loves excessively. The play opens on a suspended moment: Antigone's monologue contemplating the abyss, stealing a few seconds from a dreary life to imagine an existence where she wouldn't have had to choose sacrifice. The story plunges us into the eve of drama. Far from a marble heroine, we discover a vibrant Antigone, inhabited by desire for her fiancé Haimon, and confronted with her sister Ismene, embodiment of life and beauty. Her perfection hides a secret: she is pregnant and begs her sister to choose life for this future nephew, rather than confining herself to a cursed and bloody Thebes. But for Antigone, refusal is an absolute act of courage. She rejects the simplicity of happiness offered by her uncle Creon, a tired regent who dreams of planting turnips but finds himself trapped by his own authority. The punishment he inflicts is not immediate death, but psychological torture: condemned to endless dreams by a paralyzing potion, she must remain a spectator of a life that continues without her. The denouement, carried by the cruel innocence of two children, Eusebeia and Laodamas, shifts toward final ecstasy. Between liberating poison and hope for an antidote, the Chorus leaves us facing the eternal question: can one truly choose the end?
