The story follows Thiziri, a young woman searching for her bearings, who returns to spend four days with her family. Between mattresses on the floor and the smell of coffee, she finds herself plunged into the "joyful mess" of family life. Her grandmother Houria hides her medications (or Tic-Tacs) in her bra, while her uncle Bilal seeks his place as head of family through rigorous spirituality, hoping no longer to be a stranger anywhere.

In this house where everyone talks without always understanding each other, Thiziri attempts to investigate. Why does her grandmother hide her passport? Why does she never say where she's going? Where does her aunt go at prayer time and what is that mysterious smell coming from her room? Who is this truck driver who seems to always show up at just the right moment?

From improvisational living in the living room to hotels in Luxor, Mazel is a journey that reminds us that, despite the tears of exile and the wounds of the past, family love is a form of magic.

"Mazel": because not everything has been said yet, because life continues, again and again.

  • SCENE IX

  • Nadia and Thiziri are back at their family home, everyone is there except Houria and Nour. The living room. Everyone is gathered around the phone on speaker.
  • THIZIRI  -  Good! We're connected! Hi grandma, you're on speaker
  • HOURIA  -  Helloooo?
  • NADIA  -  Yes, hello
  • HOURIA  -  Helloooooooo???
  • RATIBA AND RAZIKA  -  Helloooo!!!
  • We hear background noise. The connection is clearly not good.
  • HOURIA  -  Helloooooo? Are you there?
  • BILAL  -  We're here, but you're far away!
  • HOURIA  -  Oh my son, my love! Have you eaten enough?
  • NADIA  -  (To Bilal) It's crazy, with you there's no interference… (On phone) Hi mom! We're all here, there's Thiziri, Ratiba, Razika, Bilal, Nacira, dad…
  • HOURIA  -  Ah!
  • NADIA  -  How are you, mom? What's it like, Mecca? How's Nour?
  • HOURIA  -  Yes, it's good, it's nice! It's very beautiful. Nour is fine.
  • BILAL  -  Are you coming back one day, or can we sell your stuff?
  • HOURIA  -  Don't you touch my things!
  • BILAL  -  I'm joking! No one would want them anyway.
  • Houria and Bilal laugh. We hear a distant male voice from Houria's side.
  • HOURIA  -  Yes, yes. Right. Nadia, can I talk to you? Biya is going to make a rooster egg for Bilal!
  • Biya rolls her eyes and grumbles loudly but gets up and goes to the kitchen.
  • NADIA  -  I'm here, mom.
  • HOURIA  -  Everyone else leave.
